Starting nursery is a meaningful step for both you and your child.
It is completely normal to feel a mix of excitement, pride, and uncertainty. For many families, this is the first time they have spent time apart from their child, and that can feel significant.
At Wildflower, we approach this stage carefully. Our focus is on helping your child feel safe, understood, and comfortable from the very beginning.
A Gentle, Gradual Start
We do not expect children to adjust to a new environment all at once.
Our settling process is gradual and guided by your child's individual needs. Sessions begin as short visits and build over time as confidence grows.
For many children, this takes place over several weeks, although every child moves at their own pace.
We move forward only when your child is ready.
What Settling Looks Like
Settling into nursery happens in small, manageable steps.
At first, you will stay close while your child begins to explore. Over time, they start to build a relationship with their Key Person, with you nearby for reassurance.
As confidence grows, there are short, supported moments of separation. These gradually increase, helping your child understand that you will always return.
This consistent, predictable approach helps children feel secure and builds trust in the new environment.
Building a Relationship with Their Key Person
From the beginning, your child is supported by a Key Person.
This is the adult who will get to know your child's routines, preferences, and personality. They will be a familiar and consistent presence throughout the day.
As your child becomes more comfortable, this relationship becomes the foundation for both their emotional security and their learning.
Your Role in the Process
You play an important part in helping your child settle.
Simple, consistent actions make a real difference:
- keeping goodbyes calm and clear
- explaining that you will return
- following a predictable routine
Children take their cues from you. A confident and consistent approach helps them feel safe, even when they find separation difficult at first.
What to Expect in the First Few Weeks
Children respond to change in different ways.
Some settle quickly and appear comfortable from the start. Others take more time to build confidence. Both are completely normal.
It is also common for children to experience a period of uncertainty a few weeks after starting. This can include clinginess at drop-off or a change in behaviour at home.
This is a recognised stage of adjustment as children begin to understand their new routine. It usually passes quickly with consistent support.
Staying Connected Throughout the Day
We know how important it is to feel reassured while your child is settling in.
We use the Famly app to share updates, photos, and key information throughout the day. This helps you stay connected and gives you a clear picture of how your child is getting on.
During the settling period, communication is especially important. We will keep you informed, and you are always able to contact the nursery if you need reassurance or have questions.
Working Together
A confident start is built on consistency, communication, and trust.
We take time to understand your child and your routines at home, so that the transition feels as smooth as possible. Throughout the settling period, we work closely with you, adjusting the approach where needed.
This partnership continues beyond the first few weeks. Supporting your child's emotional wellbeing remains a focus every day.
A Guide for Families
We have created a detailed settling guide to support you through this stage.
It explains each step of the process, what to expect, and how to support your child at home.
